David Shaw has been linked to NFL jobs since he stepped down as the head coach at Stanford in 2022, and he has now officially landed one.
The Denver Broncos have hired Shaw as a senior personnel executive, Mike Klis of 9News reports.
Shaw interviewed for Denver’s head coach job last year before the team hired Sean Payton. Multiple members of the Broncos’ front office have ties to Stanford, as team owners Greg Penner and Carrie Walton Penner went to the school and earned degrees there from Stanford’s Graduate School of Business. Condoleeza Rice, who is a part-owner of the Broncos, is the director of the Hoover Institution at Stanford.
Payton and Shaw also coached together as offensive assistants with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1997.
Shaw was the head coach at Stanford for 12 seasons from 2011 to 2022. He finished with a record of 96-54 with the Cardinal and is the winningest coach in school history. Stanford won the Pac-12 three times under Shaw and had two wins in the Rose Bowl. He resigned in 2022 following consecutive 3-9 seasons.
Shaw interviewed with the Broncos and one other AFC team for head coach vacancies, and it is possible he could receive interest again down the road. For now, he will work as an executive.
