Memphis Grizzlies guard John Konchar recently played a wholesome prank on one of his rookie teammates.
Konchar, who is entering his sixth season with the Grizzlies, told the story Monday during his team’s media day at FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tenn.
Right next to Konchar was the prank’s victim — rookie forward Jaylen Wells. Konchar shared that he ran into Wells at a grocery store and pretended to be a fan, looking to see if Wells would recognize him.
“I’ve never met him yet,” said Konchar. “I wasn’t at [the Las Vegas Summer League] or anything. … So, I got up to him. I’m like, ‘Hey, I’m John. I’m a huge Grizzlies fan. Can I please take a picture with you?’ I shook his hand and everything. My girlfriend’s behind me just taking the picture. And I’m like, ‘Dude, I appreciate it. Good luck this season.’ And we just walk away.”

Wells only learned what had just transpired once he spoke to one of the store’s employees. The cashier informed Wells that the so-called fan was actually his Grizzlies teammate Konchar.
As far as pranks go, Konchar’s stunt on Wells was about as innocent as it gets. It very much pales in comparison to the infamous popcorn prank Giannis Antetokounmpo played on one of his rookies a handful of years ago.
