San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan shared an update Friday regarding Christian McCaffrey.
McCaffrey is eligible to come off injured reserve, but the team will not be opening the 3-week window for him to be activated to the roster, Shanahan told the media.
Not only will the practice window not be opened for McCaffrey, but ESPN’s Adam Schefter says McCaffrey is not expected to play in the 49ers’ Week 7 game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, October 20.

The 49ers had placed McCaffrey on injured reserve in Week 2 due to his Achilles/calf injuries. He was eligible to come off IR in time to play in the team’s Week 6 game against Seattle on Thursday night, but that didn’t happen.
A previous report said that McCaffrey could return to action for the Niners as soon as the October 20 game against KC, but that does not seem like it will happen. San Francisco could try to bring McCaffrey back on October 27, or they could keep him out their next two games and wait until after their Week 9 bye before having him return on Nov. 10 in Week 10.
Jordan Mason has done well as San Francisco’s lead back in place of McCaffrey, but he left Thursday’s game with a shoulder injury.
